چکیده

This paper demonstrates an electric-field tuning of the ferromagnetic resonance FMR responses at millimeter wave frequencies for a monolithic magneto-electric heterostructure. The layered stack is comprised of c-axis oriented and low loss barium hexaferrite BaM and 111 oriented ferroelectric barium strontium titanate BSTO layers along with embedded platinum electrode layers, all fabricated by pulsed laser deposition technique. A tunability of the FMR frequency as large as 3.5 MHz/V has been observed at 60 GHz due to application of bias voltages in the range of several volts. The realization of such a large tunability relies on the quasi-lattice-to-lattice contact between the BaM and BSTO layers as well as the high quality of those layers. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3467777

Voltage control of magnetism in multiferroic heterostructures.

Electrical tuning of magnetism is of great fundamental and technical importance for fast, compact and ultra-low power electronic devices. Multiferroics, simultaneously exhibiting ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, have attracted much interest owing to the capability of controlling magnetism by an electric field through magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. In particular, strong strain-mediated ME in...

Millimeter wave notch filters based on ferromagnetic resonance in hexagonal barium ferrites

A hexagonal ferrite-based millimeter wave notch filter was demonstrated. The filter consists of an M-type BaFe12O19 BaM slab sitting on top of a stripline. The band-stop filtering response originates from the ferromagnetic resonance absorption in the BaM slab. The BaM slab has an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy field of 17 kOe. This anisotropy field facilitates the operation of the filter beyond 5...

Electric tuning of magnetization dynamics and electric field-induced negative magnetic permeability in nanoscale composite multiferroics

Steering magnetism by electric fields upon interfacing ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric (FE) materials to achieve an emergent multiferroic response bears a great potential for nano-scale devices with novel functionalities. FM/FE heterostructures allow, for instance, the electrical manipulation of magnetic anisotropy via interfacial magnetoelectric (ME) couplings. A charge-mediated ME effect...

Electric Field Control of Interfacial Ferromagnetism in CaMnO_{3}/CaRuO_{3} Heterostructures.

New mechanisms for achieving direct electric field control of ferromagnetism are highly desirable in the development of functional magnetic interfaces. To that end, we have probed the electric field dependence of the emergent ferromagnetic layer at CaRuO_{3}/CaMnO_{3} interfaces in bilayers fabricated on SrTiO_{3}. Using polarized neutron reflectometry, we are able to detect the ferromagnetic s...

Non-Volatile Ferroelectric Switching of Ferromagnetic Resonance in NiFe/PLZT Multiferroic Thin Film Heterostructures

Magnetoelectric effect, arising from the interfacial coupling between magnetic and electrical order parameters, has recently emerged as a robust means to electrically manipulate the magnetic properties in multiferroic heterostructures. Challenge remains as finding an energy efficient way to modify the distinct magnetic states in a reliable, reversible, and non-volatile manner. Here we report fe...
